(good afternoon) In my presentation I will focus on two major issues, explaining how the pandemic affected teenager’s mental health and what were the consequences of the isolation. I will present the negative as well as positive sides of quarantine, changes in teens’ lives, behavior, and a short survey.
The Coronavirus disease spread like fire, and millions of cases have been reported around the world, as well as thousands of deaths occurred. It was definitely a hard time, but like any other incident, that year left us with plenty of various effects.
Pandemic has brought some positive changes into some people’s lives, such as enforced postponement, lowered crime rate and fewer traffic accidents. Specifically for teenagers, due to lockdown, they spent much more time with their families, as well as learned many new things, or found new hobbies. However positive effects outset against negative effects.
Adolescence is a fragile period, marked by rapid biological and social changes, and common mental disorders are known to manifest during this time. Teenagers tend to experience lots of psychological difficulties and loss of motivation to work, due to being isolated from their social life. Educational systems, which were switched to online learning, not only provide for academic learning, but they also serve as platforms for other social-support initiatives like counselling services, after-school clubs. Schools themselves introduce children to new ideas, teach them to socialize, make friends, and participate in activities that enhance growth. And suddenly, at the beginning of this COVID-19 isolation, all these exciting social experiences were gone from teenagers’ lives. This caused lots of teenagers to get lost in their schedules, miss appointments, have their computers and social media on 24/7.
