Computers are now part of our everyday life. Computers have many uses. We use computers in many different places. In shops a computer scans the price of each item (goods). Then the computer calculates the total cost (the bill). In factories, they control machines and calculate the wages. In airport, they control the airplane’s flights. In a travel agent they are used for the printing the tickets. In hospitals, they look after patient records and medicines. In the banks a computer control our money. In our homes we also have computer. Pupils use a computer to help with homework and to play the computer games. Students use a computer for the projects and to write the letters to their friends by email. All over the world the people use it to get the information from the Internet.
There are different types of computer. The largest and more powerful are mainframe computers. It is operated by a team of professionals. Minicomputers are smaller than mainframes but are still very powerful. Microcomputers are small enough to sit on a desk. They are the most common type of computer. They are usually more powerful than minicomputers.
Portable computers are smaller than desktops. It is small and light to be carried from place to place. It can usually be powered by batteries. The largest portable is a laptop. Smaller portables, about the size of a piece of writing paper, are called notebook computers. Subnotebooks are smaller than notebooks. You can hold the smallest computers in one hand. They are called handheld computers or palmtop computers.
