It was the year 1850. A few gold miners had reached the Merced River northeast of today’s city of Merced. There they had trouble with a tribe of Indians called the Miwoks (mḗ works). One group of the Miwok tribe called themselves Uzumati, which means ‘‘grizzly bear’’. White men pronounced the name Yosemite.
Certain officials of the United States government hoped to persuade the Miwok Indians to leave their homes and settle on a special section of land called a reservation. If the Indians stayed on the reservation, the whites could dig for gold in the area around the Merced River without trouble.
The Indians did not want to leave their homes. They hid in a deep mountain valley that the Yosemite group knew about. They hoped the whites would not find them.
In March 1851, a party of miners started for the mountains to bring the Indians back. The miners were acting as militia. Militias are men who serve as for a short time for a definite purpose. The purpose of these men was to capture the Indians who had hidden.
The militia marched through wet show and thick forest. On March 27, 1851, they came to the top of a ridge. From the ridge they looked down into the most beautiful valley that they had ever seen. It was full of evergreen trees and surrounded by tall cliffs. Sparkling waterfalls spilled over the cliffs and then plunged between great boulders to join the Merced River.
One young man named Lafayette Bunell wrote afterward that when he saw the marvelous sight, ‘‘I found my eyes in tears with emotion.’’ That night at a camp near one of the waterfalls, Bunnell suggested that they name the place Yosemite Valley for the Indians who lived there. The other...
