Anykščiai City

The castle and estate of the nobleman Nykštys had disappeared leaving yet no ruins. Only a lonely mound like a saddle with two humps still looms in Anykščiai hills. People forgot even its name. Nevertheless, they named the nameless brook after the first name and family name of the noblewoman, Ona Nykštienė, in which she drowned herself. Eventually, by passing from lips to lips, people distorted and abbreviated the name and started to pronounce it “Anykštienė“in place of Nykštienė. Later researches and geographers named it Anykšta and a small town near it was called Anykščiai.
Anykščiai district is in the eastern part of the Republic of Lithuania covering an area of 1765km with 38 thousand inhabitants. The biggest river is the Šventoji with its tributaries. Among 76 lakes Rubikiai is the largest (968 ha area). The highest Storiai hills are at 194 m above sea-level.
Unique raw materials of the area, quartz sand layers, are the only in Lithuania.
Anykščiai city stands on the confluence of the Šventoji and the Anykšta (821 ha area, 13 thousand inhabitants). The name of Anykščiai was mentioned for the first time in 1440. In 1792 the city was granted the self-government right and the emblem representing a three-arched bridge over the Šventoji river and a statue of St. John Nepomuk, the guardian of bridges.
The St. Mathew church is the first attraction to capture attention in Anykščiai panorama: built in 1899- 1909, neogothic, the highest in Lithuania, with two towers of 79 m height. Altars and the pulpit are plentifully decorated in wood carvings.
