Walking in smalls streets of Old Town , you can see much of architecture wich gave Vilnius it’s name as a Baroque city . Particulary fascinating are the churches of St. Anne , St. Michael and Bernardine Church to be found in Pilies Street. My native town: Mažeikiai

It‘s not big town, but very lovely. There are many interesting places places, museamus and so on. In Mažeikiai were born our famous writers, singers, artists, which proclaimed our town by their arts.
1. Geography
Mažeikiai district is located in the north-west part of Lithuania, bording on with the Republic of Latvia. It is one of the districts in the Samogitia district, covering an area of 100,922 hectares. Here one can find vast forests and fertile farming plains with the River Venta and its tributaries winding through them. There are twelve mounds of different sizes. The most important mounds are: DapŠiai, Daubariai, GrieŽe, Rimoliai, Jautakiai, Vadagiai and Leckava. Samogitian people simply refer to them as "hills", which remind us of the ancient Kursiai and Žiemgaliai tribes who lived there a long time ago.
2. History
The town of Mažeikiai was founded by the Duke of Mažeika.
Until the 2nd half of the 19th century, Mažeikiai was a small village or hamlet, with a population of some tens of inhabitants, mostly farmers.
The settlement grew with the laying of the Libau (Liepaja) -Romny rail line in 1868 and the Mažeikiai – Riga line in 1872/4.
One of the railway stops was located at the crossing of three roads from Viekšniai, Leckava and Tirkšliai, and it was named after a small farm whose master was Mažeika. This was the way how Mažeikiai was named.
Mažeikiai grew rapidly after 1902, following the construction of the brick railway station (still existing), establishment of workshops for repair of locomotives and wagons, as well as schools for railway workers.
During the period of the Czarist Russian regime (1795 – 1915), Mažeikiai was first administratively included in the Vilna district, and from 1843 it was in the Shavli district.
On May 1,...

Individual talk (candidate 1) Topic: My Town

The topic of my individual talk is “My Town”. The given chart represents information of a survey “What are the biggest problems in your town / neighbourhood?”. From the first glance at the chart, I can claim that the majority, to be exact 54 percent, of the respondents see litter on the streets as one of the most important issues in their towns. The numbers reveal that people would like to have more sports grounds in their neighbourhood, this issue was chosen by 31 percent of the respondents. It can be seen from the chart that broken pavements also disturb people’s everyday lives, this problem was marked by 20 percent of the respondents. And the same percentage claim that homeless cats and dogs is one of the biggest problems. Thus, the biggest problem in towns is claimed to be litter in the streets.
When it comes to my town, I do not see litter on the streets in my neighbourhood, this problem isn’t occurring us. I can be proud of the system of recycling in our town, containers for paper, glass and plastic are almost in every street and easily reachable. However, I miss some attractive places where young people could meet and talk about things: we only have one good pizzeria, where we can enjoy our time and eat tasty pizzas or salads, but it’s full almost every time. Thus, in my opinion, the biggest problem in my neighbourhood is a lack of good pizzerias and restaurants.
Talking on the whole, I think that there are several things that could make our neighbourhoods more attractive. The first think we could do is making more places for young people to spend their free time together, not to become virtual people, who spend their time communicating with their computers. For example, how I...

Cultural life in my town

Cultural life in my town is rather rich. There are various ways of spending people’s free time. There are a lot of galleries, museums, exhibitions, cinema, theatres, discos and so on.
Cinemas are popular nowadays. The premieres of the films attract a lot of people. But in working days there aren’t many spectators, because people don’t have much time and they can watch films at home via home video system.
Šiauliai provide great opportunities to see theatre performances. Usually people come here dressed up. Students buy cheaper tickets top the balcony. During the interval they can walk in the foyer, buy some refreshments and share opinions of the performance with their friends.
When people don’t feel going to the cinema or theatre they visit picture galleries. I can say that there are not so many visitors. However, Šiauliai has few galleries, famous in all country.
“Laiptai” is housed in the Teachers’ House. The expositions of the gallery are oriented to the works by the artists’ of the middle generation, abstract and expressive art tendencies. The cosy space of the gallery attracts intellectual public. The programmes of the gallery include concerts, creative soirées, plays. The visitor can acquire works by professional artists.
The Šiauliai Art gallery is one of the biggest fine arts centres in Lithuania. Features fine arts exhibitions of the works by Šiauliai-based, Lithuanian and foreign artists. Its activities include classical and experimental music concerts, film, videoart reviews, performances, festivals of alternative art and fashion shows.
The Šiauliai University Art gallery was founded on the initiative of Prof. Toleikis. Its aim – to be open to various trends of art and to strive for the diversity of expositions. Realizes various projects, cooperates not only with Šiauliai-based artists but also those from other Lithuanian cities and foreign countries. Educational programmes include...

My Native Town: Molėtai

However, i‘m not one of seven thousands inhabitants. I live at countryside, but my school is Molėtai gymnasia, so I‘ve found a relation with this town again. It is situated on the eastern side of Lithuania, at Utena district. Molėtai is a small town, so it seems it hasn‘t as many problems as a city. However, you can see some drawbacks in daily routine. For example, our markets are small enough to make the queues in there. Also you can notice a small traffic congestionat rush - hour. We can often see crowds of people near the banks and in hospital too. In spite of that, life in Molėtai is quite peaceful for its settled inhabitants, on the whole. Nevertheless, in holiday season, many holidaymakers come to Molėtai, nearly the suburb of Vilnius. Beautiful nature, huge forests, clean lakes and rivers attract foreigners’ attention. The best – known lakes...

My native town

Kaunas is almost exactly in the center of Lithuania. It is highlighted by the valleys of the Nemunas and the Neris - two longest rivers in Lithuania. There live 600 thousand people. I think Kaunas is the most Lithuanian town, because there are about 90 percents people who are Lithuanian. Archaeologists determined that there were people living at the crossing of the Nemunas and the Neris rivers already in the 3rd or 4th century. Kaunas had a big castle, but now we have just a small corner of it. Kaunas began to grow rapidly in 1410. By 1897, there were already 71 thousand people living in Kaunas. When capital of Lithuania Vilnius was occupied by Polish forces, Kaunas became the provisional capital of Lithuania. During this period, population in Kaunas increased to 150 thousand and many buildings of great architectural significance were built.
We have two main parts of town. It is the Old town and the New town. At first I would like to speak about our Old town. The Old town is at the crossing of the Nemunas and the Neris. The Old town is interesting from many points of view. It is like a museum of architecture in the open air. I’ll go from rivers crossing through Town Hall (Rotušės square), and the surrouding streets. There are concentrated nearly all of the most significant old architectural monuments of the city. These monuments have been restored and adapted to modern-day needs. It is best to tour the Old town by foot, because many of the streets are blocked off into pedestrian zones. Most of buildings were wooden in Middle Ages, but nearly all of them burned down during one of the bigger fires....

My Native Town Klaipėda

Klaipėda is the third city in Lithuania considering the number of population. Today it is the only seaport in Lithuania which maintains trade routes between this country and the rest of the world. Klaipėda is the only city that boasts beaches, the Maritime Museum & Aquarium. However, a very long time ago, it was very different from what it is now.
Our seaport is very old. In fact, it is older than the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius and even older than the country itself. The history of Klaipėda spans 800 years, from the mid thirteenth century. The strange thing is that Klaipėda which is viewed as being an inseparable part of Lithuanian culture today, has actually got old German roots. In the year 1252, the German Livonian Ordin built Memelburgh‘s Castle on the coast in the estuary of the river Danė. The region belonged to the Livonian Ordin then. If you studied the history of this city carefully, you would learn it has always been shaped by two different cultures: the Lithuanian and the German. The current name of the city comes from two Baltic words ‘klaips‘ which means ‘a loaf‘ and ‘ėda‘ which means ‘eats‘, ‘is eating‘ but the Germans called the city Memel.
It was in the year 1455 that the course of Klaipėda‘s history tied to Lithuanian culture forever — it was occupied by Samogitians.
In the Middle Ages, every once a while a very large dangerous fire (in other words, an inferno) would break out to destroy the bigger part of a city. This had happened to London and Klaipėda was no exception. There have been at least two large infernos (one in the sixteenth, another in the nineteenth century) in Klaipėda which burned down a lot of wooden buildings.
Throughout its existence, Klaipėda has suffered some severe occupations. It...

My native town Jurbarkas

The town Jurbarkas lies in the valley of the mighty Nemunas River in western Lithuania. Prized for it’s history, culture, relaxed way of life, and its awn inspiring natural setting, Jurbarkas makes a perfect day trip or a great place to investigate for a few days or maybe longer.
The Jurbarkas region’s history has spanned centuries and much of it can still be seen in and around Jurbarkas. The hills and valleys surrounding it tell a glowing story of Lithuanian provincial life and culture from the time when crusaders first built Georgeburg castle in the area. You can also visit beautiful still remained Raudonė and Panemunė castles. Jurbarkas has rich tapestry of Lithuanian, German, Polish, Russian history to complement anyone’s visit.
The first thing that will greet you on your visit to Jurbarkas is the expansive displays of culture and cultural events. There are many museums, outdoor art exhibits taking place year...
